Get creative with alcohol-free drinks for the holiday season

The Internet is full of suggestions for mocktails for the holiday season. The web site of the Liquor Control Board of Ontario has over 300 mocktail recipes alone – take a look here. With numerous parties and celebrations at work and at home, it’s always a great idea to offer alcohol-free alternatives – not only for women who are pregnant or trying to conceive but also anyone who is trying to avoid holiday excesses for whatever reason. Mocktails are also a great way to have children participate in the festivities. Of course, there’s always classic holiday drinks like peppermint white hot chocolate or egg nog that don’t need any alcohol at all. But perhaps trying a mocktail recipe might lead to a new holiday favorite? Share your successes with your clients, co-workers and family members.

Here’s a recipe for Hot Spice Cider from the Peel Public Health web site.

Hot Spice Cider

6 cups pasteurized cider
½ teaspoon whole cloves
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
3 cinnamon sticks

Bring all ingredients to a boil in a 3L sauce pan over med-high heat. Reduce heat to low. Simmer over 10 minutes. Strain mixture to remove cloves and cinnamon. Serve hot if desired. Makes approximately 6 servings.

Happy Holidays!
