The Safe Babies program on Vancouver Island has recently received the SickKids Foundation Rotman Award for Paediatric Home Care Innovation.

The Safe Babies program was developed in Victoria, British Columbia by Lenora Marcellus, in partnership with Capital Regional Health and the Ministry for Children and Families, in 1998 as a response to a growing awareness of the unique needs of infants exposed prenatally to drugs and alcohol and the education and support needs of the foster parents who frequently cared for them.

With this award, the Safe Babies program will be able to provide increased support and education to the foster parents, social workers, and community partners who work with substance-exposed infants and their caregivers. The Award will be used to expand the program across the province and to develop an on-line version of the education program for those in rural and remote areas. As well, it will support ongoing work to adapt the program for Aboriginal child welfare agencies and foster parents.
